Summer has arrived!
Thursday, July 14, 2011
Well if we ever had any doubts earlier in June that summer was not coming, by now all of those doubts have been put to rest. Summer has definitely kicked in with a bang with high temperatures and lots of sun! With that being said, we have to always remember to be sun smart and wear hats, sunscreen and sunglasses and seek shade whenever possible, as to avoid the dangers of heat stroke and exhaustion. Also, we cannot stress this enough, drink plenty of water!
Now that we've sent that reminder out there to you, the readers, let's talk about all the great stuff the kids and staff have been doing to take advantage of this great weather. First and foremost, we had another fantastic Family BBQ here at the daycare on June 23rd.
Lori was our Chef of Honor at the grill, cooking up yummy hot dogs for everyone.
All in all, it was a huge success!
Summer at the daycare means FIELD TRIPS! We would like to remind all the parents that should your child be attending one of our many great field trips that they remember to send a lunch which does not need reheating, as well as in a bag to facilitate transport.
Summer means vacation time for a lot of children and staff, but that doesn't mean the field trips are lacking. Last week a group of children got to enjoy the splash park at Fort Rouge Park, and this week the children were treated to The New and Improved Childrens Museum, where they played in a station of Lasagna and Spaghetti, as well as a new funky slide, and many more fun stations. As of today, July 14th, the children are going to a Fringe Show, a magic show put on by a wonderful man and his wife and their son. This will be the third year we attend this show and the children always come back with stories and amazement. Next week, the children will be going to the Fire Station in Osborne Village, to visit with the firefighters and watch a movie about Fire Safety. There are many more Field Trips being planned as the summer progresses along, as we assure the children have plenty of activities and fun to spare! Please check the Website Calendar in the next few days for more details.
As much as we love having new and fun field trips planned for the children, there are some constants that remain a pleasure to continue with, such as the regular library trips, and the singing at Thorvaldson. These will continue on during the busy months of summer.
On June 29th, we celebrated International Mud Day. The staff set up two different activities, with, you guessed it, lots and lots of mud. The kids got to walk knee deep in a table filled with
with the mud with their hands. It was messy and it was fun!
On June 30th, we celebrated Canada's Birthday by making flags, wearing red and white and face painting Maple Leafs on our faces!
As summer keeps bringing us good weather and lots of sunshine, let's remember to be safe in the sun and enjoy! Don't forget your bug spray!
Summer is ALMOST here...

Good Day Folks!
It has been a pretty long time since we have updated the blog, but that is because the staff and children at the daycare have been buzzing around with activities and field trips and birthdays!
Earlier in the Spring we had some sad news that Inch The Clown will no longer be in Winnipeg to entertain us as she moved to BC to be with family. However, she did come one last time and the children made her a wonderful banner wishing her good luck and telling her that they will miss her sooo much. The children stamped their handprints all over and we even caught a glimpse of a teary eyed Clown. It was a sad day for all involved :( We wish her good luck over there in the mountains.

The staff and children have been working very hard at making our yard a beautiful place, and even Snow White and some of her Dwarfs came by and settled into our garden in the corner. They were donated by a kind gentleman in the area who thought our kids would love to give them a lovely home. As well, because two sneaky dwarfs went missing, Chantille has taken it upon herself with some children to make paper maché dwarfs to add to the collection. They are still working on them but look for them in the near future. The children decided to give the statues a nice bath on a warm day by scrubbing them down with soap and water to make them all new and shiny again.

Last Friday, June 3rd, some lucky children had the opportunity to go see a real old fashioned circus in a tent. The children came back with all sorts of stories and tales about what they saw. Look for some artwork and quotes from the children posted in the daycare very soon as some of the staff are working on displaying this artwork.

Summer is nearly here, even though the temperatures seem to be slow at climbing, and that means that field trips will be popping out of the woodwork. All parents should remember to check the sign in sheet to see if their child/children will be going on field trips and which ones as the staff are busy planning!
The Daycare BBQ is coming up on June 23rd, with the awesome and funny entertainment of Guitar Gary. It is always a delicious time so here is hoping for good weather!
To all parents/caregivers, please remember to prepare for hot temps by bringing extra clothes, hats and sunglasses for their children, and have it all labeled and we will take care of the rest! Have a great beginning of summer!
It's a New Year! Welcome to 2011.

Good Day Folks!
The holidays have come and gone but the activities and field trips never ceased to occur. The cold weather has arrived, which means that there is less outdoor time but the children and staff are still very busy with songs and crafts, we still have access to the gym from time to time where the children can run and stretch their muscles in the colder days.
In an effort to keep up with the cultural diversity in the daycare, our very own Mandeep brought us a little bit of history about the region of Punjab in India where she comes from, which was displayed in our daycare above the lockers. She also brought various girl dresses representing the fashion from her area for the kids to play with in the housekeeping.
The dresses were very well received, and are still enjoyed now months later. In December, we had a multicultural display, and Eufemia brought in a beautiful light up star from her own country traditions, the Philippines. Every month has a different theme so please come check it out whenever you get a chance. Have questions about it? Just ask any of the staff!
We had some great field trips in the month of December, we kept up with the library trips, which are always such a treat for the children, because not only do they get to take a city bus but they also get to watch movies like in a movie theatre, without the popcorn of course :P
In early December a group of children were privileged to visit Jennifer Howard's office at the Legislative Building, to help decorate her Christmas Tree, with decorations that the children made in the week before in preparation.
The children were treated to a yummy snack of cheese and crackers and apple juice around a large oval table, on seats that swiveled, which made them giggle.
Another great field trip that happened was a visit to The Manitoba Hydro Building, to see all the lit up Christmas Trees and the Old Santa Village that used to be displayed in Old Eatons'. The children had a great time and talked about it for weeks afterward.
One of our Jewish Parents came into the daycare at Hanukkah to talk to the children about the Minora and the Dreidle, and some history behind the game. It was also part of our cultural diversity we strongly encourage every day.
We had our annual bake sale, which went extremely well, all the plates were sold in one day! Thank you so much for the support! The children were such great little sales people, yelling out how much the plates were and what was in them as the parents walked in the daycare to pick up their children.
On the 17th of December, we had our annual Holidays Celebration, complete with Santa and presents, and followed by wonderful tables full of yummy foods. Crackers, vegetable, chips and dip and sweets, enough variety to please even the pickiest eaters! We also graciously welcomed out old friend Guitar Garry who gave us a high energy performance of Seasonal Songs, and got the children and staff moving with a dance party. Inch also came during that week and performed her Christmas Magic.
A new year has started, hopefully it has been long enough that we are all now used to writing 2011, instead of 2010 :) We hope this year proves to be as energetic and creative as the last, and the library trips ,regular appearances by Guitar Gary, Inch The Clown and Michelle, who does our weekly music program, have resumed and are still received extremely well.
We've also determined a time for this blog to be updated regularly so we do not go months without news at all, so keep checking back so you do not miss the latest entries. Same goes for the slide show, and the online calendar.
Until next time!
Summer Wrapping Up and Fall is Ready to begin!
Thursday, September 16, 2010
Hello Folks!
With summer wrapping up, it is time to update about what has been going on around here with the children and the staff and the wonderful things we have been doing. It has been a wonderfully eventful and busy summer, with field trips, gardening, walks in the neighborhood and plenty of entertainment to keep everyone happy and fulfilled.
For starters, the children have been enjoying various field trips. At the beginning of July, Frog's Hollow Farm came for a visit, along with their cute and friendly bunnies, ducks, mice etc. The children had such a blast petting, brushing and feeding the animals in the yard. Along with the Farm visit, the children went to a play at The Fringe Festival, which was filled with magic and interactive jokes. Speaking of plays and shows, the children entered a real fairy tale at the Fantasy Theater where Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs truly gave the children a trip into their imagination. The show was interactive and allowed the children to be dwarfs on stage. What a great opportunity for our blooming actors!
The children also enjoyed a regular schedule of movies at the library, which continues through the fall. Other field trips included a slew of scientific fun at the Science Gallery, The Planetarium and Imax Theatre to see a movie about Whales and Dolphins in 3D. We also had a visit from Kumari's daughters who danced for Folklorama to show us a dance from their country. The children enjoyed watching and some of them even got up and danced right along with the girls, garbed in their beautiful outfits.
As we wrapped up the month of August the children who were entering the school system, as well as the ones who have already had a year of school under their belts were excited to talk about the return to school and the many new friends and experiences they will be encountering throughout the year. We even had the housekeeping area turned into a classroom for a while, filled with books, chairs and a blackboard and chalk. As exciting as a new school year for many of them is, some of our older children entering grade one graduated the daycare.
On September 2nd, to celebrate this event we had a pizza party before saying our sad goodbyes. As those children departed though we have welcomed a few new comers to the daycare, a whole new generation of youngsters to enjoy what we have to give them and what they can teach us throughout the year.
We are already in the middle of September and the activities with the children show no sign of stopping. Now is the time for the children to help the staff pick tomatoes, potatoes and green beans from the gardens they have helped take care of during the summer months. They are fully taking advantage of the fresh veggies for snacks.
Coming up in the next few months, we have the regular visits to the library, as well as Inch the Clown and Guitar Gary will continue their fun entertainment for the children. Michelle, our well loved music teacher has come back after a long rest during the summer and is now doing music on Mondays. On October 4th begins National Family Week, staff are getting ready to prepare fun filled activities for the week. Our regular photographer will be coming next week to have portraits and group photos done, and Halloween is coming up fast, which means PARTY with costumes and treats! The bake sale and the Christmas Party are also in the midst of being planned, we will have dates for those at a later time.Stay tuned for the many exciting news and activites as staff and children continue their daily adventure at Fort Rouge Coop Day Nursery!
Mix load of events going on, June 3rd, 2010.

Hey Folks!
We would like to give you all a little bit of an update of what's been going on at the daycare recently. Since the nice weather, the children and staff have been fully enjoying everything the outdoors has to offer. Many children have been collectively going on bug hunts and collecting worms, ants and ladybugs, amongst other insects, in little jars with grass and twigs we can find around the yard. The children especially love to show off their bug hunting skills by showing the staff the various bugs they can fit on their hands.

On May 15th, we had another successful "Beautify Our Yard" day with many of the parents and staff coming together and working hard to make the yard look its best. There was a great turn out, a BBQ, and many things were accomplished, such as gardening, working on the benches in the yard, as well as decorating. Lori made some really cute pole signs for the different veggies growing in the garden so the children can identify which vegetable is growing where. As you may have noticed, there is a nice addition of little black fences around the flower beds and garden by the front windows. All of this great work is thanks to all the parent and staff, and as a bonus Jennifer Howard, the MLA for our area, showed up and got down with nature and got her hands dirty in the dirt along with everyone else, all volunteering their time on a beautiful and
hot Saturday morning and afternoon. All the staff at the daycare have really been working hard at keeping the spaces available to the children clean and clutter free, and the most obvious change lately would definitely have to be the housekeeping area. Next time you come pick up your child, please take a look at our multicultural housekeeping and shelves. In the housekeeping area we have put up a wonderful tee-pee tent, as well as some camping toys for the children to create their own camping adventures! As well, above the lockers by the wall, you will see an amazing assortment of items and saris brought to us by Kumari from her country of Sri Lanka.

As summer arrives, many of the children and staff will be taking vacation times. That does not mean the daycare will stop its activities. In fact, this is the busiest time for outdoor activities and field trips. The staff are busy planning field trips over the summer that will keep the children busy and entertained. As well, we have our Annual Family BBQ on June 17th, from 3:30-5;30, and you're all welcome to come and enjoy the outdoors with your children and the staff, and of course the wonderful food cooked by no other than our own Lori!On top of all the activities we also have our regular Inch The Clown coming once a month to perform a beautiful show of laughter and magic for the children.
Please stay tuned as we will be updating the blog on a monthly basis, or at least trying to as much as possible.
As the warm weather is here, please remember to keep yourselves and your children safe from the sun and heat! Enjoy the weather!

Happy New Year...2009
The winter season has come on like gang busters and we are happy to be half way through to the spring. Although the wind chill kept us indoors most days we have made the best of it and set off on adventures in the Parrish Hall of the Church. Dancing, exercise and all types of movement activities have taken over the play scape. Now if we can just change the rhythm of the songs to sound a little less like "Rudolph" The children have been outdoors (during the short reprieve from the icy arctic blasts). The winding walls of the ice igloo is testament to the children's creative fantasy play that occurs when the children are in the thick of it! Outside of the gates of FRCDN we have been on walks to the neighbourhood snow hills. Climbing and conquering the well packed mounds and sliding and bumping down have given each child a new appreciation for what Edmond Hillary must have felt on the peaks of Everest. Stories of paper and felt have been told under the umbrella of the roofed gazebo while children hung orange rind bird feeders from the shrubs and trees to keep our feathered friends fed through the nippy mornings. In the week that followed our outdoor escape..Chinese New Year was rung in with the construction of a beautiful fabric dragon , decorated and constructed by the children as a week-long emergent activity. The children wound their way through the daycare while listening to the lilting strains of Oriental music. Throughout the week , children painted, cut and glued gold and red paper into hanging lanterns, fans and origami shapes. Our special snack this week will include rice based goodies, fortune cookies and gold coins to cerebrate prosperity in this year of the Ox.
In the next few weeks we will be celebrating Festival du Voyager by making snow sculptures and racing toboggans. On Friday Feb. 13th staff and children will serving a hot lunch. The menu includes Traditional Tortiere , Pea Soup, Bannock, and fresh fruit. Yummy!
Our Valentines Day party will also take place on Friday Feb. 13th. Children will be celebrating the day with caring exchanges of special notes and songs of friendship and love!
